Let’s put this to bed once and for all. If you’ve ever found yourself wandering the Nudie Jeans website and screaming: "what on earth does selvage (or selvedge) mean?” at the screen, you’ve scrolled to the right place. Put simply, selvage is a portmanteau (fancy) of self-edge, a term that refers to the lengthwise edges of a fabric. To make things more confusing, it can be used to denote the edge of any fabric, but when we use the term selvage at Nudie Jeans we mean selvage denim crafted from fabric woven on a shuttled loom. So, why is it more expensive? Well, the simple answer is that selvage denim requires craftsmanship. The production process itself is signified by its slower production speed and lower output. We believe the aesthetics and the craftsmanship of its makers make it the most superior denim in the world. But don’t just take our word for it! We have a whole host of men’s selvage denim jeans to choose from – from blue selvage to black selvage (and a lot in between). So scroll up and enjoy.
