100% Organic Cotton

With organic cotton we reduce our environmental impact from the very first step in the process of making a pair of jeans.

100% Organic Cotton

With organic cotton we reduce our environmental impact from the very first step in the process of making a pair of jeans.

In contrast to organic cotton, conventional cotton accounts for 25% of the global use of artificial pesticides, but covers only 3% of the farm land. To obtain one kilo of conventional cotton requires the same amount of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and biocides.

Since clean dry denim fabric is one of the cornerstones of Nudie Jeans, why would we use anything but clean cotton to produce it? In fact, all our cotton garments originate from certified organic farming.

Organic cotton is grown without any toxic chemicals or genetically modified seeds. It has a low impact on the environment. Organic production leaves the soil useful for other crops to supplement farmers’ food and income. It is beneficial for biodiversity. In contrast, conventional cotton is a chemical-intensive process. These chemicals have a tremendous negative effect on air, water, and soil. As they are among the most toxic substances around, they also have a huge impact on people’s health in cotton-growing areas.

"What to choose is a no-brainer. It’s really about common sense."

– Joakim Levin, CEO Nudie Jeans

And there are more benefits. No artificial pesticides or fertilizers mean no energy consumption to produce those substances. Organic cotton is rain-fed to large parts, meaning less irrigation and less strain on already water-scarce areas. With all these facts on hand, it is a mystery why less than 1% of all cotton produced worldwide is organic.

Organic Cotton vs Conventionally Grown Cotton

Nudie Jeans only use organic cotton. Choosing organic cotton means that we reduce our environmental impact from the very first step in the process of making a pair of jeans. Organic cotton is grown without any artificial fertilisers, pesticides or genetically modified seeds. Organic farming methods eliminate the risks associated with hazardous chemicals used in conventional cotton farming. This is not only important for the people working on the fields but also for the soil as it is not contaminated by toxic pesticides. Cotton is a highly water-intensive crop, but by supporting small-scale organic cotton producers and methods for more effective irrigation, saving water is possible. Around 70% of the organic cotton used for Nudie Jeans products is sourced from Türkiye, and our second largest sourcing country for cotton is India. We have visited cotton fields where our cotton grows in both Türkiye and India as a part of our traceability work and for our interest in learning more about the raw material.

Of the organic cotton we use, the cotton sourced from Chetna Coalition is also Fairtrade certified. This means we have both the positive aspects of organic cotton and the Fairtrade system that guarantees fair working conditions and correct payment to the farmers for their cotton.

Recycled Cotton

Using recycled cotton is a great way to decrease our environmental impact, as cotton is a resource-intensive crop to grow. We make all garments in our Rebirth collection with at least 70% recycled fibers and produce new products containing recycled Nudie jeans originating from our own denim collected through the Reuse program.
