This month we have the honor of introducing a Nudie Jeans exclusive playlist curated by DJ, Music Producer & Environmental Toxicologist, Jayda G. Campaigning through music, art, and events is nothing new but it could be argued that it is more important and relevant than ever with reference to the state of our planet and the climate crisis. Jayda is from the west coast of Canada, having spent a good chunk of her life in biology and ecology, Jayda hasn’t steered from the environmental side of her career all the whilst creating music, DJ’ing and touring. Holding a firm position in the electronic scene as one of the top DJ’s around, her eclectic disco and house DJ sets are nothing short of incredible — it is truly inspiring to follow Jayda’s dedication to the environment and her journey within music. If you are not a Spotify user please use this opportunity to check out Jayda’s talk series JMG Talks, listen to her radio show on BBC Radio 1, find a podcast interview with Jayda or get her debut album ‘Significant Changes‘ which is released on the legendary Ninja Tune label. So in other words, there are lots of other Jayda G tips here today if you aren’t following the Nudie Jeans Spotify series. Thank you, Jayda!
Hi, I'm Kaine, The final Nudie Jeans playlist of the year has arrived and it comes to you Curated By me. As Community Coordinator at Nudie, I'm one of the few who are responsible for your newsletter updates with music, culture, and sustainability news here from HQ. I also find myself chasing the #nudiejeans hashtag, responding to comments, and answering DMs on Instagram and Twitter daily. As we wind down the decade I wanted to take the opportunity to chime in here and say thank you for the year that has been. We launched the official Nudie Jeans Spotify channel back in February and since the launch, we have had so many great guest curators and so many incredible playlists have been sent our way. I mean, look at this line-up: Kurt Vile Jaakko Eino Kalevi Sarah Klang The Bronx Maria Falbo Prins Emanuel Donny Benét Dreamtime Little Dragon Graveyard Molly Steele … a legit all-star cast. For this playlist, I wanted to keep it simple and make a playlist that works on Saturday mornings at home as the coffee brews. And so here it is, a playlist full to the brim with favorite jams from an array of genres that include some up-tempo highlights from 2019 as well as some mellow moments from the 70s. I enjoyed putting this one together and it will definitely get me through to the new year for sure (every day is Saturday for me). I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do the other Nudie Jeans exclusives from 2019. Happy New Year and Safe Holidays from Gothenburg! — Kaine (Community Coordinator)
Tsuyoshi bought his Tape Ted 16 Dips in Australia 2014 and has worn them regularly ever since. Once the jeans were well broken in and started to show signs of wear Tsuyoshi took to repairing them himself. Just like the recently released Nudie Jeans replica (style no longer available) of Tsuyoshis’s jeans feature some stunning hand made repairs. You will find 33 darning repairs and 6 boro style patch mending’s, using multiple fabrics and a variety of thread colors. We fell instantly in love with Tsuyoshi’s jeans from the minute we first laid eyes on them. Tsuyoshi’s journey with his Tape Ted jeans was very much an exploration into repairing; something he executed really well from the get-go. It is through this exploration and the tasteful mix of repair techniques the greatness of Tsuyoshi’s jeans defined — it also gives his jeans that unique character that we instantly connected with. What a year it's been for Sarah Klang, a new album in "Creamy Blue," Grammy nominations, and sold-out tours for our fellow Gothenburgian. It was the other day we saw Sarah standing on stage with Nina Persson (The Cardigans); it turns out they were singing a duet live on Swedish national television. Sarah released her sophomore album "Creamy Blue" and has been touring in support of its release throughout the autumn. We couldn't help but take a moment here today to share a couple of candid moments caught off the stage with Sarah and her band (fully kitted in Nudie Jeans). Sarah, congratulations on an amazing album and all your achievements in 2019. All photographs by @isak.asia If you haven't taken the opportunity already, you should enjoy some YouTube time with the CCTV session filmed at Nudie Jeans HQ while you're here.
A new book on the art of building a global brand by the founder of Nudie Jeans. Maria Erixon founded the denim brand Nudie Jeans with Joakim Levin, her husband at the time, in 2001. “At the time, we were almost the only company building a brand based tangibly on values. When we started Nudie Jeans in 2001, we decided that environmental awareness and human rights would permeate everything we did. The world has largely caught up in 2019 and as we’ve grown, opportunities have opened up to us to be able to contribute to the journey. We’re trying to make good use of the chance,” writes Maria Erixon in the book. In the new book Start Your Own F*cking Brand, Maria writes about the little company that became a global brand, about successes and setbacks, and the sacrifices that entrepreneurship requires. The book is also a love letter to denim and the indigo dye that turns each pair of jeans into a unique work of art – and to everyone who has been part of the journey. Start Your Own F*cking Brand is now published as a hardback in English and Swedish. You can find both versions in book stores and nudiejeans.com.
Today we have the honor of introducing you to music carefully curated by LA-based analog photographer and photojournalist Molly Steele. In conversation, Molly is open, honest, and endearing when answering questions about her photography. These traits can are transcribed and flow fluid throughout her work. No matter the subject found before Molly’s camera, a human being, or a vast landscape, there is a significant sense of intimacy exposed in her photography. You will also recognize the awareness and trust captured within each frame, nature or model it’s consistent throughout. And almost like it’s a signature, her composition always catches the mutual respect between subject and lens. Molly’s photography can and will take you places. During the making of this playlist, Molly had ridden a freight train along California’s coastline and of course, she had a camera with her. Along with her camera Molly tad taken a recently purchased Super 8 camera on this trip. As somewhat of a mini-exclusive Molly has given us permission to share some images and the Super 8 mini-movie from the trip with you. We hope that this short introduction to Molly’s ‘Curated By‘ playlist ruffled your curiosity. From here, we suggest you head straight to her website to view selected works and also follow her Instagram — when you start scrolling the feed, please do so while listening to her soundtrack she has created for us. Hopefully, by now, you’re already there. This is ‘Curated By Molly Steele‘ folks. Please enjoy. Thank you, Molly!
We have a new star in town; her name is Sarah Klang. Last year we introduced you to rising Swedish star Sarah Klang and her incredible voice via CCTV by Nudie Jeans, filmed live at our HQ. Ever since then, we've followed her every step, including everything from the debut album release, sold-out music halls, TV performances, winning a Swedish Grammy, and her Instagram Stories (we highly recommend!). When chatting to Sarah recently, we asked if she would be up for contributing to the recently launched playlist series 'Curated By' - and so here we are today with Curated by Sarah Klang is now live. Khruangbin are on their way back to Gothenburg so we thought it was perfect timing to share this special moment we had with the band in 2018. We befriended the globetrotting Khruangbin upon their first visit to Sweden early 2018. After we had been following the bands story closely since the first EP’s and having their records on regular rotation at HQ and in our Repair Shops we were over the moon they had finally made it from Texas to Gothenburg. Khruangbin had just played two shows at Hosoi in Stockholm and their album ‘Con Todo El Mundo‘ had just been released to critical acclaim from press all over the world. The album went on to be one of the albums of the year (according to us and many others) and rightly so – it’s an album warm with sounds that are rooted in the deepest waters of world music infused with classic soul, funk, dub, and psychedelia, through a Texan filter. We weren’t able to make a live show happen on this particular visit due to tour logistics but we were lucky enough to be able to invite Laura, Marko and DJ in from the depths of the Swedish winter, for a special episode of their AirKhruang music show. We hung out, introduced them to the famous Semla (a traditional Swedish cream bun served only at this particular time of year) and the band delivered a perfectly curated selection whilst streaming live on Facebook. They came, they threw down, and as they rolled out in the tour van towards Berlin and they promised they’d be back. AirKhurang Duty Free is a must listen. We highly recommend you just press play and enjoy the flight. Good news if you’re in Gothenburg next week! See Khruangbin live Fri. 1st Feb @ Pustervik (Sold Out)
WE HAVE RELAUNCHED CCTV BY NUDIE JEANS, AND SARAH KLANG WAS OUR FIRST GUEST. Session: Sarah Klang Date: SUN 11/2 19:00 (CET) Venue: Nudie Jeans HQ So, who opens the doors to their head office on a Sunday evening? We do. Well, we had many good reasons to do so this particular Sunday, as we had the honor of hosting a very special talent, namely Sarah Klang. Our lunchroom was literally turned into a music hall in a matter of hours. As the production team put all the final adjustments in place for the live stream, there was a particular buzz that filled the room before Sarah and her band were to take over our Facebook and Youtube channels. It's hard to describe the amount of anticipation at this point in the evening - it's a Sunday, and we're at work with a Swedish Grammy-nominated artist about to go live. 'Nuff said, the concert was mesmerizing, and we are glad we can now share it with you. Thank you, Sarah, for making this a very special evening for us - and congratulations on your No.1 album, "Love In The Milky Way"! Watch the entire Sarah Klang performance live from Nudie Jeans HQ below:
A while back, our good friends at Hypebeast paid us a visit at the headquarters. They seized the opportunity to pick our Co-Founder’s brain on some of the Essentials in his life.
In the 90’s he had long hair and was a singer in a band. Today, Martin Sandklef is our IT Coordinator. We asked him what’s really good at the moment. – I just discovered this website with Chinese indie bands called Far Out Distant Sounds. In a way you get thrown back to the 90’s. These bands are breathing new life into a scene that’s been kind of lost to me for some time. There’s so much charm in this, and it makes me want to re-discover bands like Sonic Youth and Afghan Whigs. – On a different note, I’m very happy about my new apartment. I’m going all in flea market.
