Curated By Peanut Butter Wolf

For this episode of Curated By, we wanted to take you on a walk down memory lane.

In late 2019 a few of us from the Nudie Jeans Brand Marketing Team were in Los Angeles for the ComplexCon event held in Long Beach. While in LA, we had the opportunity to meet up with Peanut Butter Wolf, the founder of the legendary record label Stones Throw Records.

Being the home to artists such as J Dilla, Madlib, MF Doom, and QuasimotoStones Throw is responsible for some of the most ground-breaking and genre-bending hip-hop releases you will ever hear.

It’s no secret that Stones Throw is renowned throughout the music industry and among its peers for creating a true hub for creativity and inspiring its artists and musicians. This is one of the key takeaways and a message that shines brightly in the documentary “Our vinyl weighs a ton”, a film made about the Stones Throw. The label has a recording studio in the office, a vinyl bar located in the same building below its office, and it has remained independent for the course of its 20-year history. Some might say it is everything that a recording artist could ask for in one place.

The label is diverse, not allowing itself to be genre-specific or pigeonholed. So, when it’s not beats, rhymes, and donuts, you will find blistering alternative pop, electronic, rock, and soul releases on the label. You just have to look back over the lengthy list of releases from the likes of Mayer Hawthorne, Sudan Archives, Automatic, Aloe Blacc, and DaM-FunK.
