Organic Fairtrade & Recycled Cotton

Nudie Jeans only uses certified organic cotton. Choosing organic cotton means that we reduce our environmental impact from the very first step in the process of making a pair of jeans.   Organic cotton is grown without any artificial fertilizers, pesticides, or genetically modified seeds. Organic farming methods eliminate the risks associated with hazardous chemicals used in conventional cotton farming. No toxic chemicals mean not only safer working conditions for the farming communities but also increased soil health, and soil that is suitable for crops that also can supplement farmers’ food and income, boosting biodiversity and supporting local economies.  About 70% of the organic cotton used for Nudie Jeans products is sourced from Türkiye, and our second largest sourcing country for cotton is India. We have visited cotton fields in both Türkiye and India as a part of our traceability work and for our interest in learning more about the raw material. The cotton sourced from the Indian supplier Chetna Organic is also Fairtrade certified. This means we have both the positive aspects of organic cotton and the Fairtrade system that guarantees fair working conditions and correct payment to the farmers for their cotton.  And there are more benefits. No artificial pesticides or fertilizers mean no energy consumption to produce those substances. Organic cotton is rain-fed to large parts, meaning less irrigation and less strain on already water-scarce areas. With all these facts on hand, it is a mystery why less than 1% of all cotton produced worldwide is organic.  "What to choose is a no-brainer. It’s really about common sense."  – Joakim Levin, CEO Nudie Jeans  Recycled Cotton  Using recycled cotton is a great way to decrease our environmental impact. We try to use recycled cotton from our own production or our products when we can. It can be cotton coming from our fabric suppliers own waste streams, or we recycle products that did not live up to our quality standards in production. We also recycle old Nudie jeans that no longer can be repaired or resold through our re-use program.

Your lifestyle is sustainable.

No matter how your Nudie jeans looked when you bought them, they all began as a pair of dry denim. Even the pre-washed and pre-distressed styles were dark indigo denim at first. We cherish well-worn and mended jeans. Jeans that become a part of us when worn a long time, just like a second skin.

Sustainability-Report-2022
Sustainability-Report-2022
Nudie Jeans Sustainability Report 2022

Every year we summarize our efforts in a yearly report. The sustainability report contains more details about how we work with materials, production, and the products as well as Nudie Jeans as a workplace. It also contains our challenges and goals for the future. Nudie Jeans' sustainability report for 2022 reflects the activities performed at the Head Office in Gothenburg's own retail stores and subsidiaries but also includes the impact we create through our production suppliers in Italy, Portugal, Tunisia, Türkiye, Poland, Lithuania, Sweden, and India. The denim industry has a high impact on local communities and the environment, and we work the best we can to minimize the negative effects and contribute with positive impacts where possible, in a social, economic, and environmental manner. We hope that by sharing and being transparent about our work we will inspire others to take responsibility for their full product where the impacts occur. We have mapped our value chain and identified where our biggest impacts lie and which topics we need to report on. We start from the GRI standards and the Sustainable Development Goals and have identified our most important stakeholders as customers, suppliers, and employees. Repairs & Re-use highlights made last year

There's nothing like breaking in a fresh pair of dry's, except maybe, breaking old records. Although some would argue, for us there are only two types of needles in the world. Those you put on the record, and those leaving stitches in your jeans. Safety pins are a species of their own. Thanks to you, everyone who's helped us fix what can be fixed and pass on the rest to the revivers, we've crossed a line. So, we just wanted to say thanks and let you know that we're putting the needle on this record and will let it spin for a while. Because what you do matters, every time. Last year we repaired 65 386 pairs of jeans and that is more than any year before. In school, we learned about the eco-cycles of Earth, how water from the oceans and lakes evaporates into clouds and fall back down on our heads in the shape of rain or snow. And for many of us, the circle of life was probably first introduced when wise man Rafiki raised the future lion king to the sky on that pointy cliff. There somewhere we started to connect the dots, and we haven't stopped since. When one journey ends another begins, and for us, denim is no exception. So, returning to the records, because we love old news. In 2022, we got back 20 772 pairs of jeans in our Re-use program, another all-time high. Together we let those jeans keep going, become someone else's favourite pair, a patch on a ripped knee, or degrade into fibers for new fabrics. Closing the loop is one of our biggest drives and it makes perfect sense. We want yesterday's paper, so keep em coming! Thanks for another great year together. 2022 Repaired jeans: 65 386 Collected jeans: 20 772 Sold Reuse jeans: 3 984

The shift: reduced emissions and competitive edge for Armstrong Knitting Mills

Discussions surrounding the climate have been hot topics for a while. But since the overall temperatures are going in the same direction, all players in the textile industry — big and small —need to start acting. Because every one of us shares the responsibility to decrease our CO2 emissions.

Higg BRM: Another Highscore to end the year on a positive note

Higg helps brands and businesses accelerate their transformation into a more sustainable future. Their integrated software platform, the Higg Index, features tools for standardized measurement of a company's value chain sustainability, from sourcing materials to a product's end-of-use. These tools serve to help highlight and present a brand's environmental and social impact. One such tool is the Brand and Retail Module (BRM), which assesses the risk and impact of our operations and sustainability. We’ve filled it out for three years straight, and after a thorough third-party verification process, our Higg BRM is complete. So, we are humbled, very happy, and proud to say that Nudie Jeans are Verified! And we are, of course, delighted to share our scores: Nudie Jeans' Higg Brand and Retail Module scores for 2021 are as follows: Total Environmental score 71,4% Total Social Score 70,2% This lets us benchmark Nudie Jeans' BRM scoring against previous results and other brands. But more importantly, identify sustainability hotspots to set a more straightforward path for improving sustainability performances throughout our value chain. We're proud of the positive results and the insights gained from working with the module. It helps strengthen our internal sustainability processes, work cross-functional, and deepen our understanding of sustainability from all relevant aspects of our business. Management System: Environmental 100,0% Social 95,0% Brand: Environmental 73,4% Social 75,7% Stores: Environmental 60,0% Social 76,9% Operations and Logistics: Environmental 52,4% Social 33,3%

Climate result 2021: we're on the right path

In 2018, we aligned our climate targets with the scientific consensus and within the 1.5° c pathway. And now we’re beginning to see our actions take effect. Sure, we got challenges ahead of us, but we’re taking steps in the right direction.

The importance of Biodiversity

We are proud partners in Mistra's new BioPath research program. Mistra is a Swedish foundation for strategic environmental research, and the program focuses on integrating consideration for biodiversity in the decision-making processes. Being a part of this is, of course, very exciting for us.
